The ghazal is no longer restricted to the upper class and has gained immense popularity among the common people. All this is due to the simplification in terms of both music and poetry. Jagjit Singh is considered to be the pioneer in its popularisation among all classes of people. There are many other ghazal singers both from Pakistan and India. Some of the most famous are Mehdi hassan, Noor Jehan, Jagjit Singh, Ghulam Ali, Hariharan and Pankaj Udhas.
